..:History of the mine of Arenas

enlargement of the map

The map illustrates the principal areas of the mine of Arenas.

The mine of Arenas is situated at the merging point of three different valleys: the first one rises from Fluminimaggiore, the second one from temple of Antas, the third one from Domusnovas. These are also the three departure points from which you can arrive at the mine. We suggest the route which leaves from Fluminimaggiore, and allows for the visit of the dressing plant and the mines of Su Zurfuru and Gutturu Pala. You can then continue along the cartway to the mine of Arenas.

A lot of the jobs in the mine of Arenas were under the open sky. The photo shows the negative consequences of such work on the environment.

Once at the mine of Arenas, the dressing plant of Genna Carru is particularly worth a visit. This is a large plant made-up of the dressing plant, the power station, chemical laboratories, workshops, store-rooms, showers and other smaller premises.

The equipment of the plant is intact and no machinery has been removed. The gears of some of the engines are still working. However, the plant as a whole has been left to rust, and this is truly bad!

Now (2002) the entire plant has been enclosed by an high metal net. We do not know if some works of restoration are in sight or if this is only for safety aims.

The first phase of working the crude material consisted in its crushing and selection by a metallic grille. For this there were great mechanical jigs like the one visible in the photo.

Later on the material went into great ball mills in which it was melted with water and reduced to a dense pulp.

The third phase took place in the flotation cells in which the mineral was separated from the rest by the mechanical action of the centrifugal machine and the acids.

The Lheraud shaft, dedicated to the general manager of the Pertusola, allows the miners to descend to the tunnels. Men and material travelled through the shaft.

Now even the tower and the winch building are enclosed by a high metallic net.

The two lifts were moved by a winch situated in the building near the turret.

The workshops are located in front of the flotation plant. Some tools are still present. The photo reproduces what would seem to have been a lathe fixed to the wall.

The mining village is located close to the working mine, in a thick ilex grove. It is composed of some buildings that have been sorely neglected. In the photo we see the small village chapel.
