Marganai tour

Check the discounts

The tour takes place utilising Marganai's cart tracks. This area, sited to the north east of Iglesias (a town in Cagliari's province), is made up of several mountainous terrains that peak at 906 metres (approx. 2.972 feet) at Punta San Michele.

The Marganai is notable for its mineral, geological and ecological wealth and it is covered by a thick growth of typical Mediterranean woodland.

Within the Marganai, in the area known as "Inglesiente's metal ring" - a sandstone formation rich in minerals - there are several mines from where, once upon a time, huge amount of lead, zinc and copper were extracted. The tour makes provisions to visit the mining villages of Malacalzetta, Baueddu, Arenas, Sa Duchessa and Barraxiutta.

This visit usually lasts half a day (four to five hours) but can be extended to a full day - in this case, lunch will be provided, and there will be time left to search for minerals in a safe location at Sa Duchessa's mine. The presence of an expert geologist can be arranged to guide the tour, to provide tools such as lenses, tables and hammers - and, of course, to share specific knowledge.
