the position of the Sinis Peninsula the promontory of San Marco

The Sinis Peninsula is situated north west of Oristano. It closes the Oristano Gulf with San Marco headland.

The Sinis Peninsula represents one of the most interesting Sardinian areas from a historical and naturalistic point of view.

The neolithic and nuragic settlements, Tharros (the ancient Phoenician-Punic and later Roman town), the "muristene1" of San Salvatore, the little Byzantine Church of San Giovanni and the Spanish lookout towers: these are all evidence of a millennia-long settlement, as well as of a complex overlapping of populationsw not equalled aniwhere else in Sardinia.

Sea, lagoons, sandy coasts, cliffs, basaltic tablelands and granitic little islands make up some components of this habitat.

The excursion offers a ride through time, to discover the marks of the past, either evident or hidden, which are scattered throughout the territory. At the same time the route allows us to take short walks among the colours and flavours of the Mediterranean brushwood; to feel the hot roughness of the basalt or, more, and the brisk mistral blowing along the ridge of the San Marco Promontory.

The trip will last half a day (four to five hours), or a full day (seven to eight hours). In this case lunch will be eaten in a restaurant in the little village on the sea of San Giovanni.

1. The muristene or cumbessias are small temporary religious dwellings wich are very common in Sardinia. In May or September they house religious and secular feasts that are usually of very ancient origin.
